Confession: Sometimes I'll take a rest any way I can get it.
This picture is not me. It is of some poor soul getting a shot in their mouth, presumably to prepare them for a dental procedure of some kind. It may have been root canal. So, why is this picture here? Well, I had root canal yesterday. I'm not gonna lie and say it was fun. It was awkward and pressure filled, and man is my mouth sore today. But, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would it be. Aside from the ouchy stuff, when was the last time I got to stay in a reclining position for an hour and a half without someone coming in and saying "mom I need this" or "mom where's my that"... ?
So while the dentist was poking and prodding and drilling and filing, geez, it sounds a lot worse now, I just sat and tried to relax. I closed my eyes. I went to my happy place. Which by the way, is a world where I am a best-selling author, and not a struggling freelance writer.
I should use this time to tell you that I did in fact need this procedure. It wasn't like I just decided it would be a good way to get a two hour break from the kids. For that I'd make up something much worse, like maybe, shingles. Nobody wants to come near someone with shingles, right? That would certainly buy me a couple of days at least.
All in all it wasn't terrible. The grinding noise is a little jarring. There were the constant calls of open your mouth wider. No, wider. But, hey, who doesn't hear that at home on a Saturday night, right? (Sorry mom). Now somebody pass the Percocet please.

Oh man, somehow you're words of "not that bad" didn't not make this procedure sound not that bad. I'm already terrified of the dentist and need a double root canal .... I just don't think I can do it, even if it does come with a much needed 2 hour break from the kids.
The procedure itself didn't hurt.I was really numb! It was just a little uncomfortable. The bummer is that I can't really open my mouth much today. Depending on who you talk to, this might be a good thing!
I had the same feeling about an hour long MRI last year. People asked me "Weren't you scared...bored...claustrophobic....", and I told them I loved it. No kids (or husband) asking me for things and a solid hour to sing Bee Gees songs in my head? Fabulous!
Tomorrow, I'm going to the doctor for an X-Ray of my back. It's just the break I need from my kids in the morning. LOL
Lol @Jennifer! Michelle, you are better than me. I can't stand the thought of having a root canal. If I ever do, then I doubt I will have the same pleasant attitude that you did.
Yep, I HATE the dentist. Or at least I did before I had two kids. Now, it's a lovely getaway where I can go and... relax?
To say I'm terrified of the dentist is beyond an understatement. I actually started to panic reading this. I have been "trying" to work up the courage to go back but I just can't seem to muster it. I'm not really having any problems but I would very much like to get over this fear. Kudos to you and much respect for doing something that gives me a panic attack just reading about.
I got a wisdom tooth pulled a few years ago...that was the best, most quiet 48 hours of my life. I was drugged up, my kids and hubby had to fend for themselves, and I watched the entire last season of Buffy the Vampire slayer (yeah I'm a nerd) I'm thinking about sleeping with candy in my mouth just so I can do it again .
I had a root canal last summer and commented about how relaxing it was. When I told them I was a mom of 3 boys they understood. Anyway, when the procedure was all done, the dentist said, "You're the last patient, if you want to sit and relax we'll be here for another 1/2 hour."
I'm the same way. I had a root canal last week and I snoozed the whole time. The chair is so comfortable and they give you a blanket -- heck, they treat you better than the airlines do!
This is a great post.
